Vampires are a big thing these days.  There is a lot of vampire fiction, and vampire movies.  A lot of people want to be vampires, and fantasize about being immortal and masters of the night.  While it may not be possible to do this, there is one day of the year that people can do whatever they want and whoever they want to be.  On Halloween, it doesn’t matter who you are, you can put on a gothic vampire costume and be the vampire of your dreams.

The gothic style has been popular of a few years, and it’s no surprise that people would merge the goth and the vampires into one style of its own.  Within the gothic vampire costume style, there are several styles.  One style is the traditional vampire style.  For guys, that would include the cape, and the Count Dracula look.  For the ladies, that would be the long back dress, with a high lacy collar, with pale faces and bright red lips for everyone.

The more modern gothic vampire costume tends to include more color, generally red.  It also has velvet and lace on it.  To fit in with the current goth look, it may also be strategically torn, so that the person dressed as a vampire doesn’t look nice and pristine.  While these costumes may include some blood red instead of just pure black and white, they tend to be a darker themed costume, bringing to mind not Dracula, but something possibly something more ominous.  Both the more traditional and more modern vampire costumes can be worn to parties and events where there might be entire families.

There is another style of gothic vampire costume for women.  This type is on the sexier side.  Those costumes are lower cut on top, and high slits on the bottom.  The sexy vampire costumes tend to emphasize the style and not the vampire style.  An Elvira style vampire costume would fit into this category.  There are a lot of different gothic vampire costumes available for you to choose.  Since there are so many, it isn’t hard to find one that is perfect for you.

Of all the notable vampires in the history of modern film media, I think the creepiest is that of Count   Orlok, depicted in the 1922 German movie Nosferatu. This movie was based on the Dracula novel by Bram Stoker, but since the film company did not secure the rights to produce Dracula, they went forward with an adaptation, changing the names of the characters. Count Dracula is thus changed to Count Orlok etc.

Count Orlok played by German actor Max Schreck, is truly and amazingly creepy (see photo). Adding a further dimension of creepiness, is the fact that this movie is a silent film, with very sinister music used as to complement. The masterful slinking and creeping around  of Count Orlok is enough to send chills up your spine!

To costume oneself as Count Orlok for Halloween, would definitely take some work, but could be well worth it in the long run.  A lot of facial make-up or perhaps a “Yoda” mask would work, you be the judge.

First  up is the infamous Count Dracula, created by Bram Stoker in his novel “Dracula.” The Count is extremely intelligent, seductive and evil. He is usually pictured as a Victorian gentleman, in black suit and cape. The Count is a Gothic and mysterious creature to be sure, who targets beautiful women to join him in his blood lust. The next famous media vampire is Barnabas Collins, from the 1960s soap opera series “Dark Shadows.” This is a sinister brooding and secretive vampire who operates covertly in a Gothic black and white television world. Set in 1967 in the fictional town of Collinsport Maine, Collins (a vampire since 1790) is accidentally released from his coffin in  the family crypt by a treasure hunter and the fun begins.

The Vampire Lestat

Last but not least is the vampire Lestat, created by writer Anne Rice in her “Vampire Chronicles.”
Lestat is a main character and often times narrator of these tales, very sophisticated sometimes sympathetic, sometimes evil. He is well portrayed by actor Tom Cruise in the movie, “Interview with the Vampire”  and actor Stuart Townsend in the movie, “Queen of the Damned.”
